Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Searching for Food on Instagram

  • Opportunity:
    • People are unable to find restaurants and places to eat easily through Instagram's huge supply of food pictures and blogs
      • The who: people who want to find restaurants
      • The what: they are unable to easily find food and restaurants while in an unfamiliar place
      • The why: there is no way to easily search Instagram by place and solely search for food and filter out the other photos
  • Testing the who: Anyone who travels and needs to find a good restaurant to eat at could be a "who" for this app. Also, anyone who wants to find new places in their own area could benefit from this app.
  • Testing the what: Some people are content with using apps like Yelp and Zomato to fulfill this need, but anyone who has seen food blogs on Instagram know that there are so many pictures of food that look delicious and would rather be getting suggestions on where to eat from Instagram's archives.
  • Testing the why: There are hundreds of food blogs on Instagram and no way to search them easily for restaurants in the area that you are in without gruelingly searching through every picture or searching for a location and coming up with every picture, not just food ones. This need exists because there are so many blogs and pictures that are just sitting there with no use except to look at them.
  • What I learned from my interviews: Even though the people I interviewed are in different social and age groups, they all seemed to be interested in my app. Most of them believed that almost everyone they know would also use the app. They all agreed that they had the same problem while traveling; that they couldn't find good restaurants easily and that Yelp and Zomato were the best they had but they wished they had more. 4/5 of them also agreed that they would use the app at home to find new restaurants. I learned that this opportunity is probably more popular that I thought and that other people have the same problem that I have found to have.

  1. Hi Emily, I completely agree this is a problem. Although I have never really thought of this as a problem, after reading your blog post I could not agree more. I would love 1 app that summarized it all. I was in Europe this summer and had to rely on word of mouth I was not able to do much for myself.
