Identifying Local Opportunities

1.     “Raw sewage spills wreak havoc as city ponders a fix” by Larry Barszewski from the Sun Sentinel
·      In January of 2017, a sewer pipe broke and 2.5 million gallons of sewage was poured over a neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale. The city has a very old sewer system and officials are trying to commission a play to pay for the fix as well as update the system so this does not happen again. This is also not the first time this has happened. People are demanding that the system be fixed immediately.
·      The problem is that the sewage system in this Fort Lauderdale neighborhood is very old and therefore it has broken many times and leaked sewage.
·      The people in this neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale have the problem.
2.     “When guests won’t leave party, - they might need more than hint – Miss Manners” by Judith Martin from the Sun Sentinel
·      A man wrote in asking for a polite way to excuse guests after a dinner party at a reasonable hour because he and his wife had this issue at a dinner party they hosted recently; the guests did not get the hint while his wife was doing the dishes that it was time to leave. They ended up leaving at 11:00 pm, much later than they expected.
·      The problem is that when people host dinner parties, they do not want their guests to stay all night and is it difficult to find a subtle way to hint at it.
·      In this case, the man and wife had the problem, but this is surely a problem for many people who host parties.
3.     “One dog dead, another hurt after being shot with BBs” by Erika Pesantes from the Sun Sentinel
·      A man shot 2 golden retrievers with a gun; one died immediately and one has serious wounds from the shot. They do not have surveillance of the shooting, but they do have a man with a gun caught on camera around the time and place of the shooting. The man has not been caught yet, but the police are trying to find him.
·      The problem is there is a man with a gun who killed innocent dogs and is still out there.
·      The people who have this problem are the owners of the two dogs, and potentially any dog-owner in the area.
4.     “Another death at I-95 exit prompts calls for safety solutions” by Wayne K. Roustan from the Sun Sentinel
·      A woman exiting I-95 at the Congress Ave exit in Boca Raton miscalculated a turn and went over the median and ending up crashing into a wall. She was pronounced dead immediately. There has been more than 3 dozen accidents at this specific exit of I-95 since 2011, so city officials are reevaluating the safety of the exit and finally want to make changes.
·      The problem is the exit was not built well and it is difficult for some drivers to maneuver, resulting in multiple accidents and deaths.
·      The people who have this problem are anyone who has gotten in an accident here, those peoples’ families, and anyone who potentially exits here.
5.     “Pursue better ways to stop bullying in Florida schools” from the Daytona News Journal
·      There is a bill in the Florida House that is aimed to help students who are bullied, but it only fixes the result of the problem, not the problem itself. It addresses students who are bullied and offers free transportation if they want to transfer to another public school. This is simply a temporary fix to the problem, since bullies will find another child to torment.
·      The problem is children in school bully other children, and the proposal to fix this issue is only a temporary solution.

·      The people who have this problem are children who are bullied and the parents of those children.

  1. Hi, Emily! Great job on your list of problems (never thought I'd say that...)! I can really relate to the second one: when guests don't leave at a reasonable hour. As an introvert and basically-grandma, I can only be around so many people for so long and I like to go to bed early. Even having a friend or two over is a little too stressful because I never know if it's polite to give them a start and end time for the get-together.

  2. Hey, Emily! You made a great list of articles on the local opportunities. The second article is sort of strange in that this person had to write in for a polite way to tell people to leave to me his house after a dinner party. I guess it is a common problem but normally I would think that people wanting to stay just means you’re good at throwing parties.
